And why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"owletdiscontinued\">Was the Owlet discontinued?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In late 2021, Owlet received a warning letter from the FDA regarding the misclassification of its Smart Sock as a medical device. It\u2019s worth noting this warning had to do with the company\u2019s marketing, not the actual performance of this product, but at the time, it raised a lot of parents\u2019 concerns \u2013 for us at Fathercraft included (we take our <a href=\"https:\/\/fathercraft.com\/baby-tech-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1762\">baby tech<\/a> very seriously). In response, Owlet changed the Smart Sock to the Dream Sock. Before testing the freshly named Dream Sock, we stopped recommending the product to our readers, despite an initial positive review from Fathercraft.&nbsp;Now, we\u2019ve had the chance to re-test Owlet\u2019s Dream Sock, along with the Owlet Cam 2, so we\u2019re here with a new review. What is the Dream Sock? How is it different? Is it worth the relatively hefty price tag? It\u2019s a fabric contraption that wraps around your baby\u2019s foot to hold a sensor in place against her skin. The soft fabric fits snuggly so it doesn\u2019t slip off with middle of the night tosses and turns, but since you choose the right size for your baby and use velcro to put it in place, it\u2019s not uncomfortably tight either. The Owlet uses \u201cPPG technology\u201d \u2013 the kind of tech found in other wearables that detect things like heart rate \u2013 to track \u201csleep quality indicators.\u201d These indicators include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Average oxygen level<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Movement<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wakings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While measuring these indicators, the Owlet will notify parents via lights and sounds if their baby\u2019s \u201ccomfort or sleep quality changes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-owlet-dream-sock-vs-the-owlet-smart-sock\">The Owlet Dream Sock vs. the Owlet Smart Sock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking that the Dream Sock sounds awfully similar to the discontinued Smart Sock, you would be correct. So, what changed?&nbsp;There are two key differences. The first is that the Owlet Dream sock is advertised to measure <em>sleep quality. <\/em>If there is a concern with <em>sleep quality,&nbsp; <\/em>you will get alerted. While parents may still find this beneficial (after all, indicators like heart rate are still factored into Owlet\u2019s sleep quality readings), Owlet no longer claims to provide <em>medical <\/em>alerts with the Dream Sock (for that, you\u2019ll need the FDA-cleared, prescription-only, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.owletcare.com\/babysat-fda-clearance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1766\">Owlet BabySat<\/a> \u2013 more on that later).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second key change is the addition of \u201cpredictive sleep technology.\u201d Owlet\u2019s app will give parents information about wake windows and when their baby should sleep next (if you\u2019ve never had a baby, let us be the first to tell you: <a href=\"https:\/\/fathercraft.com\/baby-sleep-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1767\">knowing when your baby should sleep isn\u2019t as intuitive as it sounds<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, is the Owlet Dream Sock still worth it, even after the changes? We\u2019re in a bit of a baby shortage here at Fathercraft, so we enlisted our friends Jon and Andrew \u2013 and their newborn, Gordy \u2013&nbsp; to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unboxing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/shareasale.com\/r.cfm?b=1632466&#038;u=1701111&#038;m=101866&#038;urllink=www%2Eowletcare%2Ecom%2Fproducts%2Fowlet%2Ddream%2Dsock&#038;afftrack=2023rvw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1768\" data-lasso-name=\"Dream Sock\u00ae &ndash; Owlet US\"> full Owlet Smart Sock package<\/a> costs $299.99. So if there is anything you do not like about the product in the first 30 days after purchasing it, you can return it &#8212; plenty of time to understand if the product meets your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what comes in the box:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One Dream Sock sensor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four fabric socks (fitting babies from 5-30 pounds, up until about 18 months)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One wireless charging base<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to the Dream app and predictive sleep technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also choose to order a Sock Plus, which fits children up until 5 years of age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and you can select from 4 different colors when ordering the sock, just in case you want your baby to be monitored in style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up the Owlet is fairly straightforward. You download the iOS or Android app to your phone or tablet, which guides you through the setup process and connecting the Owlet base station to your home wifi network (required for the Owlet app to function).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer a few basic questions about your child, set your preferred range, and you&#8217;re good to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sensor slides easily into the sock, and you choose the sock size that best fits your child at any given time. Here&#8217;s the &#8220;sock&#8221; and sensor. The sensor slides in through the slit in the sock<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Note<\/strong>: For setup, both the Owlet device and your phone or tablet need to be connected on a 2.4GHz network. Once you\u2019re initially connected, you can move your phone or tablet back to a 5GHz or hidden network (this means the Owlet works with a dual-band monitor). If this all sounds like gibberish, you can check your Wifi\u2019s name; if it doesn\u2019t have a \u201c5G\u201d next to it, or if there\u2019s a version without the \u201c5G\u201d next to it, you\u2019re in the clear. Most devices only connect to 2.4GHz, so if you\u2019ve had luck in the past, you should be able to connect your Owlet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Owlet sensor connects to the base station (which is designed to go in the parents&#8217; bedroom) via Bluetooth, and has a range of about 100 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Owlet phone app<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The base station allows you to quickly see your baby is ok with its light ring that <a href=\"https:\/\/support.owletcare.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/4411867692557-Dream-Sock-and-the-Base-Station-colors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1769\">displays different colors for different kinds of alerts<\/a>, but for more details, head to the phone app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Owlet app, which is available for iOS and Android, you\u2019ll see your baby\u2019s heart rate &amp; blood oxygen levels, base station status, and battery level. You\u2019ll also be able to view sleep history and trends, Owlet\u2019s analysis of sleep quality, and predictive sleep information (i.e., when your baby is due for their next rest).The app will also serve as your parent unit if you\u2019re using the Owlet Cam or Owlet Cam 2, Owlet\u2019s companion video baby monitor (more on that below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"owletcam\">What about the Owlet Cam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fathercraft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Owlet-Hero-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"An Owlet Cam on a table with other Owlet Smart Sock gear\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By itself, the sock doesn\u2019t provide audio or video. So, Owlet now has two options for video monitors to purchase if you\u2019d like to be able to hear and see your baby (which many parents do):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Owlet Cam, released in 2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/shareasale.com\/r.cfm?b=1632466&#038;u=1701111&#038;m=101866&#038;urllink=www%2Eowletcare%2Ecom%2Fproducts%2Fowlet%2Dcam%2D2&#038;afftrack=2023rvw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1770\" data-lasso-name=\"404 Not Found &ndash; Owlet US\">The Owlet Cam 2<\/a>, released in 2022&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At Fathercraft, we\u2019ve now tested both of these cameras. We found the original 2019 Owlet Cam pretty bare-bones from a feature perspective (especially when compared to something like the Nanit Plus\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/fathercraft.com\/nanit-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1771\">our review here<\/a>), but it has a high-quality camera, great night vision, and the ability to turn the Owlet into the complete package. Both Owlet Cams also include 2-way talk, motion &amp; sound alerts, and background audio (meaning you\u2019ll be able to hear your baby while doing other stuff on your phone when this feature is activated).&nbsp;As a spoiler, Andrew and Jon found the Owlet Cam <strong><em>2 <\/em><\/strong>to be \u201cthe most rock-solid piece of tech\u201d they\u2019ve had. In addition to everything listed above, it also features cry notifications, the ability to save and share video clips, and new exclusive color options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Owlet Monitor Duo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Owlet Monitor Duo isn\u2019t some completely different product, it\u2019s just the Dream Sock and Cam sold as a bundle. The Owlet Cam 2 is $159 as a standalone item, or you can <a href=\"https:\/\/shareasale.com\/r.cfm?b=1632466&#038;u=1701111&#038;m=101866&#038;urllink=www%2Eowletcare%2Ecom%2Fproducts%2Fdream%2Dduo%2Dwith%2Dcam%2D2&#038;afftrack=2023rvw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1772\" data-lasso-name=\"404 Not Found &ndash; Owlet US\">buy it in a package<\/a> with the Dream Sock for a discounted package total of $399. In 2020, our friends Paige and Todd tried the old Smart Sock for 3 months \u2013 and they were impressed. Their newborn, Miller, was in the NICU and came home with supplemental oxygen. They found the Owlet to be reliable and it gave them a peace of mind with continued monitoring. They also were able to confirm its accuracy, because while he was still on the supplemental oxygen, they had to complete medical-grade home oxygen tests. This meant that they got to compare the Owlet\u2019s results directly to the medical-grade, professional oxygen test administered by a nurse. It was accurate to the professional oxygen test within a few percentage points every single time. They\u2019ve been testing since they brought their newborn home back in early 2023, and they are continuing to use the sock now (8 months later, at the time of writing) \u2014 so, they like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll get into \u201cthe awesome\u201d and the \u201cwish it were different,\u201d but, generally speaking, both Andrew and Jon said they feel much better with the sock than without it. While both of them recognize that \u201cbillions of babies have survived without the sock,\u201d they felt the Owlet Duo was the best thing for them monitor-wise, and they noted how they realized they had more monitoring on their newborn the first night home than they did at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does the Owlet increase anxiety?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since our initial review, the medical community has expressed some concern over the Owlet sock. Despite Owlet\u2019s claim that 96% of Owlet owners report more peace of mind when using the Owlet, some medical professionals warn that the Owlet could increase anxiety, especially with reports of \u201cfalse alarms.\u201d Additionally, some medical professionals find the Owlet unnecessary, claiming many babies that young don\u2019t need the Owlet\u2019s level of monitoring. However, Jon is a doctor, and he emphasized he\u2019d rather have the Owlet than not have it \u2013 and that false alarms (which were rare) weren\u2019t as scary with the camera.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, baby sleep is anxiety-inducing for many parents, and for some \u2013 like Jon and Andrew \u2013 the extra monitoring helps more than it hurts (by the way,&nbsp; we <a href=\"https:\/\/fathercraft.com\/going-back-school-sids-suid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1775\">cover safe sleep practices and SIDS\/SUID risk-reduction here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what specifically have our Fathercraft friends liked so much about the Owlet?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The awesome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The phone alerts:<\/strong> These were instant, giving them confidence that they could get to their baby as soon as he started to show any signs of distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travel:<\/strong> The Owlet sock is easy to travel with, which makes a huge difference, especially if you\u2019ll be changing elevations&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Dream Sock Fit:<\/strong> The Dream Sock fit great and didn\u2019t bother Gordy or Miller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accuracy:<\/strong> When Todd and Paige saw that their sock\u2019s readings matched the medical grade readings, they were sold. Similarly, Andrew and Jon never felt that false-alarms were an issue (and they trusted it more than other smart technology, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/fathercraft.com\/cradlewise-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"1776\">Cradlewise<\/a>).&nbsp;<strong>The Duo Package:<\/strong> Andrew and Jon loved the complete monitoring made available through having both the Owlet Cam 2 and the Dream Sock. When an alarm sounded, they could quickly see what was going on (for example, they could see that Gordy was awake and putting himself back to sleep).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8216;wish it were different&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Metric History Glitches:<\/strong> After about a month, Andrew and Jon suddenly couldn\u2019t see history for some metrics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a Little Pricey:<\/strong> In our original review, Paige and Todd mentioned that they felt they still needed video monitoring. And Jon and Andrew definitely enjoyed having the Owlet Cam \u2013 but purchasing a video monitor after spending the $299 on the sock can get pretty dang pricey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hotels and the Cam: <\/strong>The Owlet Cam 2 can\u2019t connect to open wifi networks; so, although the sock travels well, the cam doesn\u2019t work in hotels. This is to keep the connection secure from hackers, so \u2013 while potentially inconvenient \u2013 you may decide you\u2019re okay with this.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scares: <\/strong>The sock alerts parents if it stops monitoring. Although this type of false alarm was pretty rare, Andrew and Jon admitted it could get scary for some people (Note: The light ring displays a different color when the sock stops monitoring due to a technical issue, which may help with this).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Changing Sock Sizes\/Dream Sock Plus: <\/strong>The sock fit great for Gordy until he outgrew the smaller sock. When he started using the larger sock, it fit a little big for a few weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"verdictowlet\">The ultimate Owlet Sock verdict &#8212; Is the Owlet worth it? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After using the Owlet Duo for 8 months, Jon and Andrew agree with our original reviewers \u2013 the peace of mind provided by the Owlet is worth the hefty price tag.
